What Parent Training Looks Like at the Las Vegas Autism Center

If you are new to ABA, you may not realize that you are not just dropping your child off for therapy. You are part of the team. Parent training is a core piece of how we work at the Las Vegas Autism Center, and I want to walk you through exactly what it looks like so it does not feel like a mystery when it shows up on your calendar.

How Often It Happens

Parent training takes place either monthly or biweekly, depending on what your funder allows and requires. Either way, it is a consistent, recurring part of your child’s program, not a one-time orientation we check off and move on from.

We Meet You Where You Are

Every parent training session starts with us meeting you exactly where you are at that moment. Life happens. Some weeks are smooth and some are hard, and we want to know which kind of week it has been before we dive into anything clinical.

We start with a check in. How have things been going for your child? How have things been going for you and the rest of the family? How has everything in between felt since we last sat down together? This happens in a dedicated space, just you and our team, so the conversation can actually be a conversation.

Then We Talk Progress and Challenges

After the check in, we walk through what progress has looked like in therapy since our last session, along with any challenges your child may have experienced. This is where we get specific. What is working. What is not. What we are noticing that you may not be seeing at home, and what you are noticing at home that we may not be seeing in clinic.

Then We Either Observe or Get Hands On

Depending on what the session calls for, we will either bring you in to observe your child’s session so you can see strategies in action, or we will bring you directly into the session so you can practice the skills yourself with our team right there to coach you through it.

That hands on piece matters. Watching a strategy work is useful. Being able to actually do it yourself, with feedback in real time, is what makes it usable once you walk out our doors.

Why Parent Training Matters So Much to Us

Parent training is a requirement at the Las Vegas Autism Center, and that is intentional. We do not treat it as a box to check.

The research backs this up. Kids make more progress when their parents are actively involved, not just in the room occasionally but consistently part of the process. A child who can request a snack from their BCBA but has never practiced that same request with mom or dad has not really gotten the skill where it counts.

Parent training is how we close that gap. It is how a skill learned in our clinic actually shows up at home, at the grocery store, at grandma’s house, at school drop off. That carryover is the whole point. Therapy that stays inside our four walls is not therapy that is working as hard as it should.

So when we ask you to be at these sessions, it is not a formality. It is because you are part of how your child’s progress holds.
